A genuine charity saving the lives of dogs and cats

NO INTAKE
March 9th 2024: As many people are aware, due to changes in staffing we are transitioning to foster based. The last dog has left the building and the rescue is closed for intake until the first part of April. Over the past 10 years, 6,207+ animals have come into rescue under our name. We had a 98% positive outcome. Our hearts broke as we lost some to parvo, to heartworm disease, or other issues. Change happens. We are older, slower, but we have not stopped. We cannot keep up the pace we have in the past. We are still working with Halifax County Animal Control and the public to network those in need with other rescue groups. Messages should be sent via FB Messenger providing pictures and all info possible on potential surrenders. Foster homes will help us help other animals in need. Foster homes make a difference. If interested in fostering please click here to see the Foster Application Form.

FOSTERING SAVES LIVES
Goober had his card pulled at Animal Control because he had been there for more than five days and so many dogs were coming in that they needed the space. Yes, the situation is getting that bad. He is only about 3-4 months old and has been at Animal Control for over a week but nobody came looking for him. We asked them to give us a day to find a place for him. He is now being fostered with one of the volunteers. Without a place to go, Goober would have died. The more foster homes we have the more lives we can save. Click here to see the Foster Application Form.

Our New Kennels
New Kennels, Rainbow Animal Rescue, NC
Feb. 28th: The small kennel building is coming along. Still have to get the fencing up, the floors done and the holes cut to install the guillotine doors.
January 27th 2024: Update on new small kennel building. We were delayed by the weather because you cannot pour concrete when it is freezing. The concrete is now poured and the photo was before it was finished or had the cleaning drains inset. The framing will start soon. We have an appointment for a fence company to quote for the indoor/outdoor kennel fencing. The plumbing has been run up to the foundation and once it is in we will be moving in the heating and cooling unit along with a stainless steel shoreline kennel for puppies. To accomplished all this while trying to get the last of the dogs out of the facility, along with all the other things accumulated over the years while still doing kennel duty has not been an easy task. On top of all that we sadly have not been pulling anything from our Animal Ccontrol because we need to get this move accomplished first. Since we do this to save the lives of the animals, it pains us greatly knowing not a lot of animals will make it out simply because they have nowhere to go. If you would like to foster a dog (give it a temporary home) click here to see the Foster Application Form.

Future Operation of Rainbow Animal Rescue
Rainbow Animal Rescue does not have any paid staff and the few volunteers we have are finding it too difficult to operate the kennel facilty at 54 Dog Pound Road. Consequently, we have stopped using the building. We are using foster homes and finding rescues for the dogs as Rainbow Rescue did 10 years ago. The more foster homes we have, the more lives we can save. We hear that Halifax County are interested in using the building as an adoption center.

If you are interested in looking after a dog in your home for a few weeks at a time or through a medical recovery, please fill out a Foster Application Form. NOTE: If you have a dog or cat and want to foster, be aware your pets will need to be current on vaccinations, altered, and we prefer but do not require a fenced yard. We will furnish all food, medical, crates, collars/leashes, etc.

Potential adopters are required to fill out our Adoption Application Form before they can be approved for adoption.
Due to lack of volunteer time, we are only able to answer questions from prospective adopters that have filled out an application form.

We are only scheduling appointments with approved adopters. We have so many calls our voice mail is often full. You can text but with so many texts it is hard to respond. We have 400+ applications at this time. We do look at each one, but as unpaid volunteers with jobs (we have to pay our bills) and families (yes we have those, too) we are limited in how quickly we can process them. A lot of time is spent with messaging. It is best to fill out the application.

Our vetting expenses for 2022 were over $65k. This year donations are down and our outreach funds are exhausted. We are currently in debt to the tune of over $5k at Vets offices. Many people have continued to donate faithfully to us and they are a blessing because their help allows us to provide care to the pets we help.

Reclaiming a surrendered dog
If you surrender a dog to us, you CANNOT send someone else to come get it/them the next day. YOU must do an owner reclaim. We do charge for boarding and any vet care we may do on intake. After 72 hours (we do try to be understanding to those that feel they have made a mistake) we do not return owner surrenders. Dogs we take in are normally vaccinated on intake along with flea/tick prevention and worm meds. So if you surrender a dog and have a change of heart the next day, be prepared to pay our expenses. Only the person who surrenders an animal as the owner may reclaim that animal.

Adopting a dog
Would you like to adopt a dog on the day of your visit? You need to be a pre-approved adopter. Fill out our Adoption Application Form now so that you are ready to adopt when you see a dog that like. We do NOT do on the spot adoptions. Applications must be submitted and vetting/personal references must be checked before an adoption is completed. You will not be able to adopt a puppy or dog on the day of your visit if you do not have a verified application. Click here for the Adoption Application Form.

What we do
Rainbow Animal Rescue is a no-kill rescue based in North Carolina. We are a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) animal rescue organization (EIN 20-0241166). We are not a business and do not employ anyone. We started our rescue in an effort to help the many unwanted, abandoned and mistreated animals in Halifax County, North Carolina and the surrounding areas. We keep dogs in our homes until we can find loving 'forever' homes for them. We rely on donations from the public to help us save the dogs and cats.

We are not Animal Control!
We do not take in stray dogs. All the dogs we have for adoption are surrendered by their owner or have been rescued from Animal Control because their owners did not claim them within the 72 hour stray hold time and its time was up.

We have had some people that will wait to see if we post their dog to avoid paying County reclaim fees/fines. If you want to claim (not adopt) a dog that is now property of Rainbow Animal Rescue you will be required to pay all County reclaim fees/fines along with any rescue expenses such as vaccines given. Often when we pull an animal it is on the 'put to sleep' list because of lack of space or time in/out policies. When we pull from Animal Control, it is after their mandatory 72 hour stray hold (except for a few that we foster for the 72 hours). After the 72 hour hold has expired the dog/cat is legally considered abandoned and is property of Animal Control to dispose of as they wish. When we pull from them, ownership of the animal is transferred to Rainbow Animal Rescue. We have come to the agreement with Animal Control that dogs we deem fit to return to the original owner, will have all outstanding fees paid to the County by the owner. Have your pet microchipped so that it can be returned to you by Animal Control. Adoption Application and Fees
An adoption application must be on file for each animal adopted. The application form can be found online - CLICK HERE. Our adoption fee is $175 covering all age appropriate vaccines, microchip, heartworm test (if old enough) deworm, and spay/neuter. It also includes heartworm treatment, or if adopter opts for slow kill it includes the doxycycline and 12 months of heartworm prevention.

Foster Homes Urgently Required
We rely on people to provide temporary homes to the dogs and cats we have rescued. The more foster homes we have, the more pets we can save from certain death at the county pound so we never have enough! We prefer our foster homes to be in Roanoke Rapids and Halifax area but we are open to offers. If you would like to foster a dog or cat please fill out our foster home application form. Someone will then contact you to carry out a home check and explain what is required of you.

On our Facebook page you will find photo's of rescued dogs and cats, news of events, requests for assistance, details of lost and found dogs and news of pets in their forever homes. This is a public page, you do not need to login to see it.
